Did a Copying Mistake Make Humans So Smart?[discovery.com]May 07, 2012
 
   As DNA replicates, damages may occur. In certain circumstances, DNA will actually duplicate parts of existing genes. The result of this is that the new, duplicated gene can be manipulated with minimal repercussions on the host (as the original gene still exists.)

Scientists have found, by activating similar genes in mice, that a past duplication and then manipulation in human DNA might have contributed to the current complexity of our brains.

Inch Long Flea-Like Relatives Drained Dinosaurs 165 Million Years Ago[esciencenews.com]May 02, 2012
 
   Found in China, these flea relatives were actually flatter and shaped more like bedbugs. Officially dubbed Pseudopulex jurassicus these bugs were larger than an inch with proboscis more like hypodermic needles. They were also equiped with claws that allowed them to grab onto dinosaur scales and hold on, so as to feed, just like their modern-day counterparts.
